Visual & Multimedia Basic Design

A solo project spanning 15 weeks, exploring self-expression through four visual mediums.

The project was divided into two parts. First, a catalog book across four chapters — graphic shapes, photography, typographic images, and slogans. Then, a second project building upon that material: designing an A0 poster that distills all four mediums into one cohesive visual identity.

The Assignment

How do you express who you are through image, shape, text and light?

This course challenged me to explore self-expression not through words, but through visual mediums — working in black and white, with my own photographs and my own initials. Everything created in Project 1 became the raw material for Project 2.

Project Overview

Two projects, one identity

01

The Catalog Book

Four chapters, four mediums: graphic shapes, photography, typographic images and slogans — all exploring visual identity in black and white.

02

Solo work, full responsibility

Every creative decision was mine. Weekly feedback sessions pushed each iteration forward and helped me build a stronger critical eye for my own work.

03

From catalog to poster

Project 2 required reinterpreting and combining elements from at least three chapters into a single A0 poster — concept and cohesion over decoration.

Project 1

The Catalog Book

Four chapters, four mediums — each week a feedback session that pushed me to experiment and make more deliberate choices. Everything created here became the raw material for Project 2.

01

Graphic Shapes

Abstract forms and patterns in black and white — shape alone as a carrier of identity.

02

Photography

Self-expression through my own photographs — light and composition as the only language.

03

Typographic Images

My initials and name as visual material — the letterform itself becomes the subject.

04

Slogans

Short expressions built around my own name — meaning over graphic form.

Project 2

Designing the poster

Using the catalog as source material, I developed three versions before arriving at the final — each pushing a different direction.

Poster version 1
Version 1

Playing with slogans and circles — a "busy" poster with a calm centre. The color combination wasn't quite right yet.

Poster version 2
Version 2

Better balance and color — but too "happy" for what I wanted to express. It reminded me of New Year's Eve.

Poster version 3
Version 3 → Final

Loud, busy, and personal. My initials woven into the composition. This became the foundation for the final poster.

Reflection

Design as a tool for personal storytelling

This project allowed me to explore self-expression through different visual mediums — photography, graphic patterns, text, and typography. I learned to prioritise concept and creativity over technical perfection, which encouraged me to experiment and think more freely. By combining the material into a single poster, I developed a stronger sense of clarity in visual communication and learned how to distil complex ideas into one cohesive design.
